BERLIN: Twenty-five Years of the German Amateur-Radio-Club (DARC)

On September 7 this year, we commemorate the 25th anniversary of the short wave meeting held at Bad Homburg near Frankfurt in 1950 during which the individual radio amateur clubs of the German Federal Republic an West-Berlin got together to form the Deutsche Amateur-Radio-Club (DARC).

This contemporary report reminds us of significant days at Bad Homburg:

The meeting was initiated by OM Bauer, DL3AD, who also welcomed the guests. Among them there were Prof. Dr. Esau, Dr. Nestel and Schulz-Schwieder, Dr. Fleischer and Slawyk as representatives of the Federal Postal Authorities, as well as representatives of various foreign amateur radio clubs and the press. In an address, Mr. Bastian, head of the local administration, pointed out that amateur radio was a symbol of peace. The French radio amateurs were represented by OM Haas, DL5AJ, from Strassburg, who emphasized the necessity of a friendly understanding between Germany and France. From the Netherlands, the first scretary of the V.E.R.O.N., OM Reiger, PAØANI, had come. OM Oxley, DL2MW, had just returned from a tour of Europe, brought back the best wishes of the British and Danish amateurs. OM Gerland, YU3FLA, from Yugoslavia and DL4CK, a well-known American 2-meter-operator rounded up the congratulatory from other countries.

The past twentyfive years have brought the DARC a lot of hard work, many heated discussions, and great success. On this anniversary we would like to thank all those who have contributed their good efforts. Let us also shake hands with those who, at some time or other in the past, preferred to be on their own. In our common cause it is only success that counts.

Today the German Amateur-Radio-Club (DARC) is composed of 19 districts and more than 530 local clubs with a membership that is nearing 30,000. This remarkable upward trend promises well for the future.
